Tianhou Temple is dedicated to Matsu, Goddess of the Sea, who is worshiped by fishermen and sailors. The temple’s Matsu statue, which was brought from Fujian by a Qing Dynasty general, is known as the “Black-faced Matsu” because centuries of incense has turned her skin black. A copy of Tianhou Temple built entirely of glass was recently completed near the coast not far from Lukang.
Nine Turns Lane is a traditional alley that was built with many turns to protect residents from the strong winter winds. Historical buildings on Nine Turns Lane include Shiyi Hall, which was a meeting place for poets and scholars, and Remembrance Hall, where a woman died from grief waiting for her husband to return.
Breast Touching Lane is so narrow that two people can’t pass by each other without touching.
(At Breast Touching Lane)
A: What do those characters on the wall say?
B: Breast Touching Lane. It’s the narrowest lane in Lukang. 摸乳巷。是鹿港最窄的一條巷子。
A: Whoa! Is that like a local version of Lovers’ Lane? 哇！這是鹿港版的情人巷嗎？
B: Ha-ha. No. It was named that because two people couldn’t pass without touching. It was also called Gentleman’s Lane, because a gentleman would always wait for a lady to pass though first to avoid touching her. 哈哈。不是啦。會這樣叫是因為兩個人同時通過時無法避免身體碰觸。它也稱作「君子巷」，因為君子都會等女士通過之後才走，以免碰到她。
