美國人在職場及生活上都大量使用慣用語，有些用法不但很難從字面上判斷其意，更有別於我們在傳統教科書上所學用字。例如hold your horses、John Doe、luck out，如果聽不懂，可能會完全誤解整句話的意思，例如下面這句話：
We lucked out with the joint venture with Disney.
一看到luck跟out，你可能就會在腦中組合出「好運」＋「出局」的意思，所以會以為這句話是說「我們很不幸沒有取得跟迪士尼的合作。」
事實上，luck out的意思卻是「運氣好」，所以這句話的意思應該是：
「我們運氣很好取得跟迪士尼合作。」
像這樣的用法在美國人的對話中經常出現，尤其在商務場合中，職場人士如果因為聽不懂、看不懂、答非所問，不但會導致自己的專業能力被質疑，甚至可能錯失升遷的機會。所以當我們已具備了基礎的商務英文能力後，如何將聽、說、讀、寫升級為更「道地」的英文，便是進階過程的重要關鍵！
以下整理10個常用的英文商務用語：
a slew of… 許多，大量
To make the idea a reality, our company’s founders instituted a slew of pioneering practices.
為了將理念付諸實現，本公司的創辦人制定了許多創新的做法。
a suite of… 一套，一組
My plan is that our panelists will present a suite of ideas and discuss these ideas.
我的計畫是由小組成員提出整套的想法後並加以討論。
A-list (n.) 首席名單；首選名單
B-list 則意指「後補名單」。
Tom is on the XYZ Company’s A-list for executive VP and CFO.
湯姆在XYZ 公司的執行副總及財務長的首席名單中。
A-OK (adj.) 相當好的；沒問題的
等於A-okay；是比OK 更高的評價，意指better than OK（比OK 更好）、great（太棒了）、near perfect（幾乎完美）。
By and large, our leasing subsidiary looks A-OK this year.
整體來說，今年我們旗下的租賃子公司表現亮眼。
absent (prep.) 缺少
一般當形容詞使用，在此作為介系詞，等於without。
類似的用法還有in the absence of…（沒有⋯）。
The task force will release discussion materials, absent a compelling reason to the contrary.
特別小組會發出討論資料，除非有絕對反對的理由。
accommodate (v.) 處理，應對；使提供
To accommodate the growth in head count, we will begin an office-space expansion this year.
為了因應人員的增長，我們今年會開始尋找更大的辦公室空間。
account for… 說明；對⋯負有責任；占⋯；確認（生存、安全）
The drop in productivity at the plant is quite easy to account for.
工廠的生產力下降，很容易找出原因。
accountability (n.) 可解釋性；負有責任
To maintain accountability throughout the process of this project, we provide regular updates on progress.
為了釐清專案過程的責任歸屬，我們定期報告最新進度。
accountable for… 對⋯負責；說明
Making board members legally accountable for decisions by the board will make a real difference.
讓董事會成員對董事會的決議負起法律上的責任，將會使情況大大改觀。
(the) acid test 嚴厲的考驗
這個用法來自在鑑定黃金等金屬時，會利用硝酸這種酸性 (acid) 液體。
The president isn’t very popular among the board members now, but the acid test will be whether he gets fired by the board before the end of this quarter.
現任總裁不太受到董事會成員的歡迎，但真正的嚴苛考驗是在這一季結束前他會不會被董事會炒魷魚。
