Amélie, the quirky 2001 French rom-com starring Audrey Tautou that was a surprise international hit and won five Academy Award nominations, is being reprised as a musical. It’s unlikely that one man, however, will be lining up for a ticket.

“I absolutely loathe musical comedies, and I hate Broadway,” said director Jean-Pierre Jeunet in an interview with French radio station RTL. Jeunet, whose film credits include The City of Lost Children (1995), A Very Long Engagement (2004), and, you guessed it, Amélie, added that the idea of a musical adaptation of his movie “ disgusts” him.

“I ’m not interested in doing Parisian music,” he told Paste magazine recently. “I don’t think I’m even going to use an accordion in my score.” This will provide little solace to Jeunet, who said he only agreed to authorize the stage production for the money, which he plans to donate to a charity for children who need cardiac surgery.
